What is a CSA?

For over 25 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Many flower growers have expanded this concept to their farms as well. In our case, our farm offers a certain number of "shares" to the public consisting of one bouquet of fresh flowers per week. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive their fresh flowers for a pre-determined number of weeks during the flower growing season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief:

Advantages for farmers:

  • Get to spend time marketing their crop early in the year, before their long days in the field begin

  • Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow

  • Have an opportunity to get to know the people who enjoy the flowers they grow

Advantages for consumers:

  • Enjoy ultra-fresh, local flowers before the general public has an opportunity to purchase them

  • Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season

  • Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their flowers and learn more about how local flowers are grown
